Our thanks go to all conscientious members who have paid their dues on time. As you know, members must have paid their dues no later than February 1, 2012 in order to enter students in the auditions. We will continue to enforce this deadline.

Purpose of the Auditions

The purpose of the Dallas/Fort Worth Area Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing is to offer its members’ students the following considerations and benefits:

  • Encouragement toward more diligent study in the preparation of appropriate and distinguished repertoire.

  • An opportunity to perform under conditions designed to provide the most complete and total consideration for the student and, ideally, to combine the best elements of competitive and non-competitive performance.

  • A specific goal, stimulating the desire and incentive for vocal and musical self-improvement.

  • An opportunity to sing before qualified and impartial judges and to receive careful and constructive criticism.

  • Opportunities for public appearance by outstanding students.

  • Recognition of unusual talent and achievement through monetary and other awards.

Eligibility

Any student currently studying with a NATS member of the Dallas/Fort Worth Area Chapter who is in good standing (dues paid by February 1, 2012) may participate.

Procedures and Requirements

All music theater auditions and advanced divisions preliminaries will be held on Friday night, March 23, 2012. All classical divisions plus advanced division semi-finals and finals will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Southmont Baptist Church in Denton. Members must have paid their dues no later than February 1, 2012 in order to enter students in the auditions.

Entrant Applications and Fees

  • All entry forms must be completed by THE TEACHER.

  • All teachers are limited to 10 student entrants, unless additional judges are provided. (NOTE: Accompanists may play for 10 per day, but teachers may only enter 10 for the entire competition TOTAL. One student in two different divisions counts as two student entrants.)

  • If a student entrant has studied with his/her current teacher for less than 8 months, the name of the previous teacher MUST ALSO be listed on the official entry form.

  • No entrance applications accepted by phone or e-mail.

  • The application deadline for all student entrants is March 2, 2012. Absolutely no entries will be accepted after this deadline.  Do not request exceptions.

  • Any changes made to an application after it has been received MUST BE APPROVED by the auditions chairs. Please be prompt in requesting necessary changes (i.e. repertoire or accompanist).

  • The audition fee is $10 per student entrant. There are two categories in which you may enter a student: Classical and Music Theater. Students entering both categories must pay TWO ENTRANCE FEES of $10 each.

  • Personal checks will not be accepted from students. Each teacher should collect entrance fees from students and send one personal check to cover the total fee or pay online via Paypal. Checks should be made payable to DFW Area Chapter NATS.

Accompanists

  • Students must bring their own accompanists to the auditions.

  • Accompanists may play for 10 STUDENT ENTRANTS ONLY per day. Since there is not an accompanist form this year, please try to keep accompanists at 10 students per day. The computer will catch it if you do not, and we will have to call you to make changes.

  • Applications without the accompanist’s name WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

  • NO teacher may accompany ANY student in the auditions.

Adjudication

  • Each chapter member must be available to adjudicate a minimum of a half-day each year or one full day every two years, even if he or she has no entrants in the auditions.

  • Teachers desiring to enter more than the limit of 10 students may be given consideration with the arrangement of an additional judge approved in advance by the auditions chair. The judge does not need to be a member of NATS, but must qualify for membership.

  • All teachers entering one or more students MUST be available to judge. If a teacher is unavailable for one or more days of the auditions, a replacement judge must be provided by the teacher for each day that the teacher is unavailable. The replacement judge must be approved by the audition chair.

  • Three judges will be assigned to every session, despite the perennial difficulty of scheduling judges; the chapter will NOT ALLOW two judges to constitute an official judging panel.
